The Titicaca lake

High up in the Andes and between the volcanic range and the granite mountains, lays the mythical origin of the Andean culture. Lake Titicaca, is one of the must see places in Peru. Surrounded by two mountain ranges, it is the highest navigable lake in the world, and is a sweet water inland sea. It has no connection to any of the oceans, and despite it's location above 12,000 ft, its rim is one of more densely populated areas of the country.

Here the gods manifested themselves in the form of the founders of the Inca Empire. Manco Capac and Mama Ocllo were born out of the foam of the lake. Among the many traditional communities that live here, the Uro peoples live on self-made floating islands, constructed with reeds. The Taquile islanders, known for their exceptional textiles, were recently recognized as a unique cultural heritage of the world by UNESCO
